Lukashenko calls for resumption of free movement of citizens in EAEU

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) – We should adopt algorithms for resuming free movement of citizens in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the online meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on 21 May, BelTA has learned.

“I believe that our governments should agree on concrete joint algorithms to resume free movement of citizens in the territory of the EAEU,” the Belarusian president said.

“Of course, we should continue taking measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and other diseases,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.

The countries should be more decisive about reopening their borders, the president believes. “The current president of the EAEU [Kazakhstan presides in the EAEU in 2021] has been right to suggest that we follow the example of the European Union and take more steps in this direction. We have always looked at the EU. Why don't we follow its example now? The EU member states have almost fully reopened their borders to each other by now. What do we fear? We have kept our people locked up within national borders long enough,” he noted.

“I would like to point out that for almost two years since the start of the pandemic, small country Belarus has never closed its borders: neither for your citizens, nor for economic entities. Let's step up work in this area,” the Belarusian head of state said.
