Lukashenko briefed on progress in Belarusian cattle breed project 2024

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) –  Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Gusakov spoke about the role of science in the agricultural sector as he spoke at a meeting chaired by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to discuss rural development and efficiency of the agricultural sector, BelTA has learned.

The president inquired about the status of his instruction to create a new cattle breed. In this regard, Vladimir Gusakov noted: "This work is being carried out in three farms: Ustye in Orsha District, Shipyany-ASK and ZhodinoAgroPlemElita. All the breeding work is focused there. We assumed it would take about 8-10 years, and we have already passed a third of the way."

He also explained: "We have drawn up a plan of work to develop a new breed. The scientists are working according to the plan, and in principle, I think that we will meet the deadline. We will have our own, Belarusian unique breed of red cattle with unique characteristics of milk both in terms of fat content and protein. In addition, A2 milk is free of allergenic effects."

The breeding experiment has been going on in three farms for several years and is yielding good results. Red cows are superior in terms of milk yield to traditional black-and-white breeds.

"Now we have the basic breed in the country, but we will create our own, a Belarusian breed. We have good Holstein cattle in the country, but this is not enough. We need to have several breeds across all livestock: for dairy cattle breeding, for pig breeding, and so on. Now work is underway in accordance with the requirements," Vladimir Gusakov emphasized.

The president, having inquired about in the details of this work, emphasized: "Everything should be done efficiently."
