Lukashenko believes Syria’s new forces will not sever ties with Belarus, Russia

BORISOV, 10 December (BelTA) – I am sure that the new forces in Syria will not sever ties with Belarus and Russia, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a working trip to Borisov, BelTA learned.

The head of state said that Syrian ex-president Bashar al-Assad was not a dictator. He had no resources for that. The West was involved in the latest events, Aleksandr Lukashenko believes. “They needed to break it. There is enough oil there, enough gas. They need to build a gas pipeline through Syria to the Mediterranean coast. All this is in the interests of the West and the Americans. They play the main role there,” the head of state is sure.

“I am sure that the opposition forces, as they are called, whatever they are, will not severe ties with Belarus, with Russia. They are not idiots. They will at least have two wings to rely on. The West has the power and so on, and Syrians do not need to quarrel with them. But they won't break ties with us either. If they do, consider that the Americans and the West did it. The Syrian opposition included. We'll live and see,” the president said.
