MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) – We need to tread carefully in party building in Belarus. The society should mature for certain changes, including for party-list elections, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the 6th Belarusian People's Congress in Minsk on 11 February, BelTA has learned.
The head of state recalled that according to the recent large-scale sociological study, the level of trust in parties ranges from 3 to 6%. "It's bad," the president commented. He also noted that there are very few real parties in the country.
Belarus should step up work on party building, Aleksandr Lukashenko believes. However, this does not mean relaxing legislation for setting up political parties. This is not the way, the president said.
“When we see real parties in action, we will be able to speak about proportionate representation at elections to the parliament and local councils of deputies,” the Belarusian president believes. “The society should be ready and mature for this,” he added.
