KAZAN, 23 October (BelTA) – Belarus wants to be among the nations that seek a world balance, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with BBC journalist Steven Rosenberg on the margins of the BRICS summit in Russia’s Kazan on 23 October, BelTA has learned.
“I am not going to enumerate the merits of the states that makes part of this association. The association is at its initial stage, and it has already approached half of everything: population, territories, production potential and so on. As for the strategy, if the BRICS member countries move this way and pick up pace, I am sure they will surpass many associations (they have already surpassed many, including the G7, G20 and others) and approach the United Nations without replacing it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said commenting on the reasons for Belarus' intention to join BRICS.
In his words, the country could have been asked a similar question after World War II when it joined the UN. “The purpose of the UN was to keep the world in balance. We see the harm of a unipolar world. We see that BRICS can be a counterbalance to the current model of unipolarity and balance the world. There is nothing wrong with that. We want to be among the nations that seek to ensure security for the world and balance it. This is the main thing,” the head of state said.
