Lukashenko: Belarus should preserve vocational education

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) – There is no way Belarus will destroy vocational education system, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during the Nationwide Conference on Teaching on 27 August, BelTA has learned.

“We should not destroy vocational education under any circumstances,” the head of state warned. Otherwise, according to him, the country will face colossal problems. In this regard, Belarus compares favorably with many of its post-Soviet peers, and this was acknowledged at the highest level. Thus, at one of the EAEU summits, a request was made to provide assistance in training qualified workers. “To which Putin replied: “You know, we have an even bigger problem with this. Only Belarus can help you (of course, not to the extent that you would like). They have preserved vocational education. And we destroyed it after the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said recalling that conversation.

According to the president, this problem has already snowballed in other post-Soviet nations, while Belarus has preserved this crucial element of the education system. “We have the necessary infrastructure, and we can use it to train more workers, blue-collar specialists. This is a vital link,” the head of state said.

Another positive effect of vocational training is the opportunity to get a full understanding of the chosen profession, to get hands-on experience, to develop an excellent groundwork for subsequent study at a university. “These are people who are truly in love with their profession. They are self-starters. If they are farmers, or agronomists, or zootechnicians, or economists, they will not go into any other profession. Therefore, it is very important for us to have this middle way - between school and university,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

He believes that in order to provide high-quality training, a vocational school does not need a “branch” of a modern workshop with the most advanced equipment on its premises. It is better to establish cooperation with enterprises, construction companies and agricultural organizations so that training takes place directly on the ground. “We need to address this problem. Members of the government are present here. A decision must be made,” the president said.
