Lukashenko: Belarus needs to keep building up its defense capabilities

BARANOVICHI DISTRICT, 24 September (BelTA) – Belarus needs to continue to build its defense capabilities to resist the enemy in the event of military aggression, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a meeting at the military training area Obuz-Lesnovsky, BelTA has learned.

"The formula is well-known: if you want peace, prepare for war. I want to emphasize once again (although why should we justify ourselves to anyone) that we are not going to fight with anyone, we do not want to fight... We have said this many times. They take heed. But still our opponents, our rivals continue to go about their business and continue preparing to fight against us, let's say frankly. Therefore, we need to prepare for war. God willing, war will not happen. No matter how acute the situation around Belarus is, we have not yet seen any trends towards unleashing a war against us," the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that, taking into account the experience of both combat events in the neighboring state and recent military conflicts around the world, Belarus has already reformed the army four times. "This is probably the fifth time we are going to modernize our own Armed Forces," he said.

During the visit to the Obuz-Lesnovsky training area, the president was shown many innovations in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles which have already become a new word in modern warfare. Although drones can seriously affect the course of war, the country will not be able to effectively defend itself  without trained soldiers and reliable weapons.

“Drones have revolutionized warfare. Of course, they are unlikely to reverse the war, if it to happen. But they will significantly affect the course of military operations,” the head of state said. “Drones are a serious matter. As the military say, they are a highly efficient weapon. It is truly scary to say such things, but nevertheless this is the reality. Today, as I said, the warring parties do not spare drones in order to hunt down a person [individual soldiers]. This is cheaper than to train a soldier. Therefore, drones are here to stay.”

In order to effectively fight against enemy drones, it is necessary to have modern electronic warfare systems. Here, Belarus has had competences since the times of the Soviet Union. “We have known this for a long time. This is our thing. In the Soviet Union we were at the forefront in this sector. Today this knowledge has come useful. We must develop the most advanced counter-drone complexes. A lot has already been done, and there is still more to be done,” the head of state said.

Counter-battery warfare is another important area in modern warfare. “We have a new military term. It is not just a term but a new process in combat operations. Being attacked by artillery, you must instantly locate the attacker, and counterattack. You have to do it quickly. You need to have the proper equipment to do that,” the Belarusian leader said.

At the meeting in the Obuz-Lesnovsky military exercise area, Aleksandr Lukashenko said that Belarus should be ready to counteract such weapons.
