MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Last year's protests in Belarus made a number of CIS countries to reconsider their attitude to security matters, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Belarusian students on 29 January, BelTA has learned.
One of the questions to the president dealt with the protests that swept through the cities of Russia virtually re-enacting the ‘Belarusian scenario'. Aleksandr Lukashenko was asked how the CIS leaders reacted to his repeated warnings predicting that similar extremist incursions could take place in other post-Soviet countries.
“They no longer take these matters for granted. What makes this incursion, as you call it (a very accurate definition), into Belarus so special is that the blow was delivered to a strong monolithic state. They struck at a stable, strong, monolithic state. It was a test: if it worked in Belarus, it would work in other countries as well,” the president said.
The head of state emphasized: there were no grounds for color revolutions in Belarus, like in Armenia or Ukraine. “They wanted to carry out a blitzkrieg in Belarus in order to get a springboard for an offensive against Russia, permanently or like in 1941, whatever they managed to do. Had we not slowed them down here, they would have rushed over there, using social networks and other modern technology,” the Belarusian leader noted.
Aleksandr Lukashenko also commented on the latest events in Russia: “The writing is on the wall. They are striking at them the same way as here, at the main decision-makers, along the power vertical which structure is practically the same as in Belarus. This is just the beginning. They are starting to rock the boat. And the intensity of the processes will depend on their scale. The Duma elections are scheduled for September, and they will be preparing the society for this. Someone remembers the shooting at the White House in Russia, someone is itching to do it, and someone thinks that it will happen again. It will never happen again. I know the leaders of Russia, they will be able to resist this,” the head of state said.
Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the fact that the CIS countries are in the zone of interests of many major global players. “We are in the zone of interests of the United States of America and the European Union as a whole. As I said before the election, we are simply being torn apart. And God forbid that we end up as an arena of a proxy war. This should not be allowed to happen. This is exactly how the situation is understood in Russia and other post-Soviet countries, and no one is lowering their guard,” the president noted.
