Lukashenko: Belarus cannot stand aside from global environmental problems

SVETLOGORSK, 14 February (BelTA) – Belarus cannot stand aside from global environmental problems, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with the personnel of Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Mill on 14 February, BelTA has learned.

“Everybody is concerned about environmental problems today, and we cannot stand aside,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “When I was told that there is a bad smell in the air in Svetlogorsk, I did my best to sort things out. Ecology is number one priority. In the 21st century we should not set up production facilities which will poison ourselves and our children.” He stressed that a Svetlogorsk-based pulp factory has modern high-tech equipment. “Everything meets very high global standards here,” the president said.]

According to the head of state, he has been living in very clean places since childhood. Therefore, environmental issues are very important for him. He believes that the plant administration will also use such approaches and plant trees on the territory very soon. “Good ecology and cleanness are the attributes of a higher level. Negligence and dilapidation are not about Belarus. Therefore, I am paying a very serious attention to environmental issues,” the president said.

“Please remember: air, food and water are crucial elements for people's existence and health. And movement, of course. People should be more active,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “You also need good food and clean air, and you will be healthy.”
