MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Libya are restoring intensive relations. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he met with Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army Saddam Khalifa Haftar in Minsk on 21 October, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Dear Saddam! I’d like to welcome you and your colleagues. I thank you for this visit. We truly have something to talk about. I would also like to thank you for the big contribution you make to the restoration of our relations with the Libyan state.”
The head of state recalled that Belarus and Libya had been busy advancing the relations previously and he had visited Libya and had met with the previous head of state of the country. “We’ve agreed on a lot of things and we’ve done quite a lot. But due to certain reasons our relations have been ruined,” he stated.
“We kept them up in some areas but the relations have been restored most intensively recently. Once again I ask you to convey the kindest wishes to Field Marshal [and Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Belqasim Haftar]. I greatly appreciate his dedication to mending our relations. And I would like to assure you that all the agreements we’ve reached and will reach will definitely be honored,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“I know the situation in Libya very well. We closely monitor what is going on. I know that many forces both inside and outside (particularly outside) would love to influence the situation. But I should say that the nation of Libya will choose the way and the people, who will feed, clothe, and ensure the security of the Libyan nation. I know that you are intent on bringing peace and tranquility to the Libyan nation and on uniting the Libyan state into a single whole. We are ready to work with you in this regard day and night,” the head of state remarked. “Any proposals of yours in this area are welcome. If we can do something, we will provide every aid and support to the Libyan nation.”
“We are also interested in it because a calm and developing Libya will be able to secure peace and tranquility for half of the African continent. Rest assured that you’ve come to your friends,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
A government delegation led by Saddam Khalifa Haftar had arrived in Minsk the evening before. The Libyan side is interested in establishing new contacts with Belarusian partners. Manufacturing sector, agribusiness, healthcare are among promising cooperation avenues.

In turn, Saddam Khalifa Haftar thanked Aleksandr Lukashenko for the meeting and conveyed wishes of strong health and happiness from Khalifa Belqasim Haftar personally to the Belarusian leader and to the Belarusian nation as a whole. “We are very glad about our relations,” he said.
BelTA reported earlier that Field Marshal and Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Belqasim Haftar visited Belarus in February 2025. “I want you to know that we are well informed about the situation in Libya, we know Libya very well. I have a special attitude towards your people, I visited Libya back in the day. Of course, today Libya is different. But you should know that we are ready to help you in every way we can,” the head of state said during the meeting with Khalifa Belqasim Haftar.
