Lukashenko arrives in Uzbekistan on official visit

TASHKENT, 7 February (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived in Uzbekistan on an official visit. The plane of the head of state touched down at Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian leader was welcomed at the ramp by Uzbekistan’s Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakhtiyor Saidov, Acting Khokim (Mayor) of Tashkent Shavkat Umurzakov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Aleinik who had arrived in Uzbekistan the day before.

In Tashkent the Belarusian head of state will hold negotiations with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The two leaders will have a one-on-one meeting and an expanded meeting where they will be joined by their delegations. The presidents will thrash out plans to deepen interstate relations and to intensify trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian contacts.

“The two heads of state will focus on cooperation in various industries, as well as agriculture, science, education and tourism,” the press service of the Belarusian leader informed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko and Shavkat Mirziyoyev will also discuss the regional and global agenda, Belarus-Uzbekistan interaction in integration organizations and in the international arena.

The 2nd Forum of Regions of Belarus and Uzbekistan was held in Tashkent on the eve of the president’s visit. The parties concluded over 20 contracts and agreements worth a total of $80 million.

The president of Belarus paid official visits to Uzbekistan in 1994 and 2018, and working visits in 2016 (twice) and 2022. In 2014 and 2019, the president of Uzbekistan visited Belarus on official visits.

In 2018-2022, bilateral trade increased 3.2 times. In 2023, it rose by another 12% to exceed $565 million.

Belarus and Uzbekistan have prepared a cooperation roadmap for 2024-2025. According to Deputy Prime Minister Leonid Zayats, it features almost a hundred export and investment projects worth more than $1 billion.
