Lukashenko arrives in Pakistan on official visit

ISLAMABAD, 25 November (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived in Pakistan on an official visit. The Belarusian air force one landed at the Nur Kha Air Force Base in Islamabad, BelTA has learned.

The military base is used to receive aircraft with official delegations of foreign countries.

In the airport the head of state was welcomed by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Three dozen soldiers of the guard of honor lined up along the red carpet. The welcome ceremony was accompanied by welcoming volleys from artillery guns. This tradition is not only considered good manners, but also speaks of the friendly attitude of the host party.

Islamabad is looking forward to the visit of the Belarusian president. The capital city has been decorated with Belarusian national symbols and posters with portraits of Aleksandr Lukashenko and the top leadership of Pakistan. The posters read the following in Belarusian and English: "Mutual respect, trust and partnership", "Building bridges for prosperous future", "Partners in progress and prosperity", "New era of cooperation".

Islamabad also hosted a Belarusian-Pakistani forum. According to Chairman of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BelCCI) Mikhail Myatlikov, Belarusian enterprises have already reached agreements worth $17 million.

The bilateral trade approached $50 million in 2023. The president of Belarus believes that the two countries can do much better. In August, at a meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the Belarusian head of state emphasized that the parties agreed to “re-examine and restart relations in order bring them to an even higher level”.

“You will agree that the trade that high-tech Belarus has with a country of more than 200 million people [like Pakistan], is very small. Therefore, we need to deepen and diversify our trade,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked.

The press service of the head of state said that the visit will focus on further expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation with an emphasis on practical steps to develop trade and economic interaction.

In Islamabad, Aleksandr Lukashenko is set to hold talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The one-on-one meeting will be followed by talks featuring the delegations of the parties. The parties will consider the most promising areas of cooperation and discuss a joint action plan for the future.

“Special attention will be paid to regional and global security, interaction in integration associations and joint work on international platforms. A package of international documents is expected to be signed after the talks,” the press service of the Belarusian leader said.
