MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has appointed Vladimir Karanik Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), BelTA has learned.
Previously, Vladimir Karanik held the post of the deputy prime minister of Belarus.
"Vladimir Stepanovich [Karanik] has become a central figure here. I spoke with you over the phone: thank you for being patient amid these personnel reshuffles. We must elevate science to a higher level, while also considering the needs of academics and the Academy of Sciences. Naturally, I discussed this with Vladimir Gusakov [who previously headed the National Academy of Sciences], and he understands the need for young, promising, but also experienced professionals there. Among all the candidates presented to me, I chose you. I know scientists will welcome you, and that matters to me. You have worked as a minister and, more importantly, as a governor. You gained a wealth of valuable experience and knowledge. People in Grodno Oblast held you in high regard," Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
"Science is very important for us because we simply cannot move forward without it," the Belarusian leader emphasized.
The head of state also recalled his meeting with Vice Premier of the State Council of China Liu Guozhong held earlier that day. "He stated that we must focus on serious objectives and specific innovative contracts. China, as a global giant and virtually a world leader, no longer sees its own or our development in simple projects: we need innovative products and industries to compete. That is correct. Otherwise, why create anything at all?" the president remarked.
Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed confidence in the abilities of Belarusian scientists. "However, it is not always that we, the government and our governors, fully understand this. I believe that with your skills, experience, knowledge, and persistence, we can achieve great results. We must carefully review personnel and development plans. You were present when we discussed these plans. You know the human resources pool, from bottom up. I very much hope that you will succeed in this work. Most importantly, I am confident that the scientific community will welcome you, and that matters greatly," the Belarusian leader advised.
While making other personnel decisions, Aleksandr Lukashenko also spoke about former Head of the NASB Vladimir Gusakov. "Vladimir Gusakov, who has worked as the helm of the Academy of Sciences for a long time and has achieved a lot, will not be discarded. He is not old yet, he can still work. Yesterday, the head of the President Administration spoke with him and conveyed my message: if he wants to work, there will always be a place for him. He is a wellspring of experience and knowledge. We don’t have many such people, and we must not lose them."
