Lukashenko appoints Krutoi as first deputy prime minister

MINSK, 29 November (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made a decision to appoint Belarus' Economy Minister Dmitry Krutoi as First Deputy Prime Minister. Aleksandr Turchin, who is currently holding this position, has been appointed Minsk Oblast Governor, BelTA informs.

“I am going to discuss changes in the government with you. I have not concealed that. Of course, the main stage will begin after New Year when the government will report on their performance. Just like in the past, before the presidential election I always formed the government and the entire power vertical to show people with whom the current president will work if re-elected,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to the president, Aleksandr Turchin should begin working independently. Head of the Belarus President Administration Natalya Kochanova supported this approach. “In fact, Turchin leaves the economic post in the government, so I think that the economy minister can occupy this post,” the head of state believes. “Besides, we will discuss a candidate of the post of the economy minister.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko explained that new appointments in the Minsk Oblast administration are not attributed to personnel issues. Current governor Anatoly Isachenko leaves his post due to health reasons. He worked well as governor and will continue to monitor the state of affairs in this region.

In 2002-2012 Aleksandr Turchin worked as head of the Economy Department at the Minsk Oblast Executive Committee, in 2010-2015 – as deputy chairman of the Minsk Oblast Executive Committee. “You know Isachenko. He is a responsible person and is in the know of the economic situation in Minsk Oblast. He will help you. He will work as the president's authorized representative in Minsk Oblast,” the head of state stressed.

The candidacy of Dmitry Krutoi for the post in the government was supported by Aleksandr Turchin. In his words, the current economy minister is one of the most qualified specialists in the government.

“I think that you will propose a good candidacy for the position of the minister who will be a patriot of Belarus, will engage in a meaningful dialogue in the east and in the west. He will still monitor roadmaps [with Russia], we will help him, if necessary. We will help a lot. It is not necessary to replace the head of our taskforce. Besides, only a few days are left to work on the matter. If necessary, the minister will replace this post later,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.

BelTA reported earlier that on 29 November the president also met with Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich. A proposal to nominate Mikhail Myasnikovich as the chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission was made (Belarus will take over the presidency over the EAEU in February 2020). Therefore, prospects of Belarus' presidency and representation in integration bodies in the post-Soviet space were high on the agenda of the meeting.

The head of state noted that the proposal to nominate Mikhail Myasnikovich as the chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission had been thoroughly analyzed and prepared. “Certainly, we've thought about a proper candidate. And we had people to choose from,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked. “But I think only you can do the job. Because all the candidates I've had to review are weaker, have less experience, and are less diplomatic. You have all the proper skills.”

Apart from that, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Stanislav Zas will become the secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization as from 1 January. In this regard, matters concerning future operation of the State Secretariat of the Security Council were discussed at the meeting in the Palace of Independence. The meriting was attended by Stanislav Zas and Head of the Belarus President Administration Natalya Kochanova. Aleksandr Lukashenko wondered about possible candidates to fill the position of the state secretary of the Security Council of Belarus. He was interested in whether there were any problems in the Security Council and whether the body needed reforms. “Right now I am more interested in the matter of future operation of the secretariat of the Security Council of Belarus. And you will have to keep an eye on these things for a long period of time until your replacement is thoroughly familiar with the job. I think you will find some time for it in Moscow,” the president added.
