Lukashenko announces plans to build elevated metro

MINSK, 30 December (BelTA) – We need to build an elevated metro to connect satellite cities with Minsk, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he attended a ceremony to launch the new section of the third line of Minsk metro on 30 December, BelTA learned.
Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled that in the 1990s he was offered to stop its construction, as it was considered very expensive. "I seriously thought about it, because we had no money at that time. But the Lord showed me the way then and I decided to keep the project alive and to save Metrostroy, even if we build a meter a year or a day. Because it is the expertise. If we had stopped the construction then, young people would have no opportunity to learn how to build metro and we would lose all the expertise. Not many countries are capable of doing this kind of construction. It is hard. It is the expertise and skills. You know better than I do. This is why, having saved the metro project then, we are able to proceed with the construction though it is not cheap. We are doing and will continue to do it," the Belarusian leader emphasized.

The president shared the additional plans in this regard. This is related to the development of Minsk satellite cities and transportation links between them and the capital. "We will not expand Minsk beyond the ring road, as it is done with other cities, because Minsk will become overcrowded and difficult to live in. That was why we decided to build satellite cities. You know them: Logoisk, Dzerzhinsk, Smolevichi... But they must be connected by high speed routes. We will plan and look for opportunities to build an elevated metro. Who will do it? You will," the Belarusian leader said.

"So your team today is just the beginning. You need to double your staff. We should pay more attention to the construction of the metro," the head of state added.
