Lukashenko: Agriculture needs to take new steps forward

SHKLOV, 9 August (BelTA) — It is time for agriculture to take new steps forward. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement while talking to local residents in Shklov, BelTA has learned.

“Time has come for agriculture to take new steps forward. We must do it. Resting on our laurels, we may miss certain things. Agriculture has become a good growth driver for us. We are gaining seriously, including this year,” the head of state mentioned after a government conference held to discuss matters concerning the effective development of agricultural production in Shklov District and the neighboring Orsha District.

The president remarked that he virtually never hosts production conferences in Shklov. “Because when I drive around Shklov, I am overwhelmed with recollections. Good ones and bad ones. And I think what emotions I may have during the conference… But due to the current circumstances I had to meet with the heads of Orsha District and Shklov District here, in our land. One can say it was a historic meeting. Because we started reforming the agriculture from here, from Shklov District. And not because it is my birthplace or because you are my fellow Belarusians. But because I knew every little bit here, every field. And it was complicated to put one over on me, deceive me or omit something,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

He pointed out that global demand for food is rising. Particularly in regions with growing population such as Africa and Asia. Nevertheless, in these conditions efforts are being exercised in Belarus to tame prices inside the country as much as possible. “You can tame prices but tomorrow the shop shelves will be empty because everything will be sold and exported,” the president remarked. He explained that overdoing it is unacceptable with regard to taming the prices.

“This is why we’ve decided to take another step. And start from Shklov District once again. We’ve decided how we will develop agriculture, how we will feed and clothe our people. It is the key topic we’ve talked about. We talked about personnel management, housing construction, and so on. We’ve discussed these problems. Over the course of four hours we came up with certain decisions on how Shklov District will develop and how other districts should be developed by following its example,” the Belarusian leader concluded.
