Lukashenko addresses winter woes, ‘snow battles’ on TikTok

MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the current snowy winter and the people who express dissatisfaction with the work of public utilities on TikTok as he visited Planar in Minsk on 30 January, BelTA has learned.

“Another wave of cold is coming. We won't have severe frosts down to -30°C anymore, but it will still be cold," Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian leader believes it is very important for children to experience what a real snowy winter is like. “I recently said: it's very important for your children to feel what winter is. And this feeling will stay with them forever,” he is convinced. “Let them make a 'snow woman' and a 'snow man.' Let the children experience this together with you.”

The president shared memories from his childhood, when winter was exactly like the one this year. “In childhood, everyone cleared snow, especially in the village. I remember from my school days. After the night snowfall we all waited for the older kids - ninth, tenth graders - to pass first, and then we would follow along the little path they made," he said.

The president gave another example. In the years when he worked as the head of an agricultural enterprise, the kind of machinery Belarus has now was not available, and roads often had to be cleared with shovels. “A DT-54, a crawler tractor, a bulldozer… It went through where it could. A three-meter-wide space: you could ride a horse or you could walk. Tractors couldn't pass through such ruts. For people to reach the farm by morning, they would go out and clear the road,” he added.

The head of state also noted that he has seen the TikTok videos from certain individuals who express dissatisfaction with the work of public utilities. “There are a handful of them, but that's society,” the president emphasized. “Let them post their messages; they have that opportunity.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko said that he responds to certain complaints on TikTok when people write about wrongs done to someone. However, upon verification, far from all of it turns out to be true. “Someone write it deliberately... We start checking. These checks cost money. We spend money, but it turns out it's not true. Or there was no such incident at all,” he added.

It was noted that some complaints about the utility services are related to the failure to clear a parking spot in someone's yard. Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that it is everyone's responsibility to clear the snow around their own car.

“For me, what is happening in Ukraine is the worst thing that could happen. God forbid… I'm not talking about the war. People are freezing there. It's warmer for them in a regular tent (not even a military one, but a camping tent) on the street than in their homes. That’s a catastrophe,” the head of state stated.
