Defensive nature of Belarus-Russia nuclear arms exercise reemphasized

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – The world is unstable and Belarus and Russia should not miss the blow the way it happened in the middle of the last century. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement for reporters after negotiations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Minsk on 24 May, BelTA has learned.

While talking to reporters, the Belarus president made a few comments about the joint exercise meant to practice the application of non-strategic nuclear weapons. He made it clear that Belarus has no desire to attack anyone, however, the country needs to know how to defend itself and use the weapons it has.

“I’ve honestly admitted that it is our third drill since nuclear weapons were deployed in Belarus’ territory. Russians have probably had tens of such drills. Nothing surprising about it. We do everything they [Western countries] have been doing up till we started doing,” the president pointed out.

“We are not doing anything special. We are making preparations and practicing. We have to be ready. The world is unstable and dangerous. We cannot miss this blow the way it happened in the middle of the last century. We will not allow it. They have to know it. But we are not whipping up tensions. We don’t need a war. Today we talk only about peaceful prospects. But we keep our gunpowder dry. There is nothing special about it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.
