Chepurnoi appointed Belarus’ ambassador to Turkmenistan

MINSK, 2 December (BelTA) - Stanislav Chepurnoi has been appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Turkmenistan. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant personnel decision on 2 December, BelTA has learned.

Until now, Stanislav Chepurnoi served as Head of the Department of International Cooperation and Trade of the Office of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus.

“I will put it straight: we need to cooperate with Turkmenistan, no matter how difficult it is. There are problems today. There are both subjective and objective problems. They [Turkmenistan and Turkmenistan's authorities] have always been very interested in Belarus. We have everything they need,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized. “We also have serious interests in Turkmenistan, because they are very interested in what we can do, especially in technology.”

After his appointment, Stanislav Chepurnoi told the media that Belarus and Turkmenistan have a long-standing friendship, and bilateral relations have always been built on the principles of mutual respect and partnership. “To date, our countries have been cooperating quite effectively within the framework of international organizations. Cooperation in education, culture and sports has resumed following a forced pause in the post-pandemic period. There is an intergovernmental commission in science and technology,” the diplomat said. “The head of state emphasized the need to develop trade and economic relations with Turkmenistan. The economies of our countries are complementary in many respects. There are a number of areas of cooperation of mutual interest. These are, first of all, industrial, agricultural and transportation sectors. At present, the parties are coordinating the date of the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, during which plans are in place to discuss in detail all cooperation prospects.”

In general, Belarus is ready to develop comprehensive cooperation with Turkmenistan and aims for a constructive and productive dialogue. The trade amounted to about $30 million last year. In previous years, however, this figure was at least twice as high. The new ambassador is sure that there is also a lot to work on in this area.

According to Stanislav Chepurnoi, there is a direct air service between the two countries. Belavia operates regular flights from Minsk to Turkmenbashi. “We will work in this area as well. It is good to have a direct communication, but it is necessary to make it more frequent and regular. This also makes us closer, including in the humanitarian sector,” the diplomat said.

As for humanitarian cooperation, Belarusian education is traditionally in demand among citizens of Turkmenistan. Before the pandemic, the number of Turkmenistan students in Belarusian universities reached 10,000. Now their number is about 4,000. “It is increasing every year. We will work in this area, too,” Stanislav Chepurnoi said.
