Call to green-light eco-friendly packaging production in Belarus

SHKLOV, 24 January (BelTA) – We need to give a green light to the production of eco-friendly packaging in the country, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he visited Shklov Newsprint Mill on 24 January, BelTA has learned.

After hearing out the reports on the operation of the company, the head of state got familiar with the products of the mill. The Belarusian leader showed a big interest in paper packaging. The mill produces it in large amounts and for different purposes. “As I am not going to cancel my instruction on the need to replace plastic with paper, we need to green-light the production of paper materials and packaging in the country,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

In his opinion, plastic packaging should be banned in some industries, except, of course, those sectors where it is indispensable. “Let's take, for example, plastic boxes for apples. They are strong, durable. They are here to stay (for now at least). They are easy to recycle, if necessary,” the president cited an example. He suggested everything else should be replaced with eco-friendly materials.

He also highlighted the need to build waste processing plants: “There should be no landfills and mountains in the region. It is huge money. We should recycle all the garbage. It's an stringent requirement. We need to formalize it, spell out the time-line so that the government should know that we need to get away from hard plastic.”
