MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) – Sakhalin will soon start trial operation of the first hydrogen-fueled BelAZ dump truck, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a meeting with Governor of Sakhalin Oblast of the Russian Federation Valery Limarenko in Minsk on 28 October, BelTA has learned.
The president noted that Sakhalin will soon start trial operation of the world’s first hydrogen-fueled dump truck. Speaking about the experiment, Valery Limarenko emphasized the importance of practical tests aimed at evaluating the performance of a hydrogen-powered vehicle in a quarry.
"We have an active coal mine. We plan to increase production by 1.5 to 2 times. It is a large project that currently has 150 vehicles operating. If Russia and Belarus manage to implement such a large-scale hydrogen project under the sanctions, it will be a serious technological breakthrough. Hydrogen is the future, and we need to learn how to work with it," the governor said.
Speaking about cooperation with Belarus in general, he noted that a formal agreement was concluded in 2015. This year the parties have agreed on the tasks for the next three years.
The region primarily purchases machinery in Belarus. "Recently, we have bought a hundred buses. I have counted how many vehicles we have bought over the nine years of cooperation (since 2015). It turned out to be 900 units," Valery Limarenko stated.
He noted that the trade statistics do not provide a complete picture, because Sakhalin Oblast purchases Belarusian machinery not only directly, but also from suppliers inside Russia. "We will continue to buy engineering goods form Belarus. There are certain reasons for that," the governor said.
The head of state noted that Sakhalin is conducting a unique experiment to achieve carbon neutrality. "We are ready to cooperate with you on innovative projects, including sustainable transport ones," Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
