Belarus hails Egypt's role in settlement of situation in region

MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) - Belarus points out an important role of Egypt in the settlement of the situation in the region, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with Ali Abdel-Aal Sayed, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Egypt, who is on a visit to Belarus, on 15 November, BelTA informs.

The head of state emphasized that the Belarusian side pays much attention to the cooperation with Egypt, especially in the context of international relations. “We appreciate the role that Egypt is playing again in that turbulent region. We are keeping a close eye on the conflict in Palestine, on the role that Egypt is playing in stabilizing the situation and settling the relations between Israel and Palestine,” Alexander Lukashenko remarked.

The president said that the sides managed to agree on many things during the latest state visit of the Belarusian delegation to Egypt. “We have a plan of action, as they say, a roadmap for the development of our relations. I want to assure you that we are determined to follow this roadmap,” the Belarusian leader stated.

He also conveyed the best wishes to the president of Egypt. “We are ready to welcome him at any convenient time, we will learn more about our opportunities so that we could step up efforts in building our relations,” he said.

Besides, the president pointed out the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Belarus and Egypt. He remarked that there are groups of friendship promoting bilateral cooperation in the parliaments. “We will always be happy to welcome representatives of the Egyptian parliament in Belarus,” he said.

This is the first visit of the speaker of the Egyptian parliament to Minsk in the history of the Belarusian-Egyptian inter-parliamentary contacts. The two countries are interested in expanding trade, economic, and humanitarian cooperation, so the Egyptian delegation is expected to visit OAO BelAZ, the scientific and technical center LEMT of the Belarusian optical and mechanical association BelOMO, the NASB center for the production of multi-purpose drones, the Belarusian State University.

Belarus and Egypt are implementing a comprehensive program on cooperation for 2018-2019. In 2017, mutual trade amounted to $97.4 million, which was significantly higher than in 2016. In January-September 2018, the bilateral trade increased to $79 million, with Belarus demonstrating trade surplus.

A representative office of MAZ and MTZ Trading House operate in Egypt. This year Minsk Automobile Plant has opened its assembly plant in the country. Amkodor, Gomselmash, and Bobruiskagromash started selling their products on the Egyptian market. In Belarus there are four enterprises with 100% Egyptian capital and two joint Belarusian-Egyptian enterprises.
