Belarus’ employer-sponsored education programs need improvements

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) – We need to improve employer-sponsored education programs in Belarus, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the Nationwide Conference on Teaching on 27 August, BelTA has learned.

Continuing the conversation about the education system, the president emphasized: “We should also take a look at our employer-sponsored education programs. There seems to be a system, but there is no proper transparency and efficiency.”

The head of state said that a lot of time had passed since the decision on employer-sponsored students was made, and it was time to take the stock. “Andrei Ivanovich, you should present a report in the government,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said addressing Education Minister Andrei Ivanets.

Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that the level of training under such programs often leaves much to be desired. In this regard, the head of state suggested introducing the practice of preliminary work assignment before graduation (perhaps in the third year) so that the future specialist could get familiar with the peculiarities of a particular enterprise. “We need to look into this issue in detail,” the president said.

The head of state also criticized employers-sponsors as well: “It is you who should determine the competencies that a specialist needs and take an active part in the development of training programs and qualification requirements.” This is where the university academic staff should actively join the process. “No engineer or deputy director will not come to you and say: “Let's revise the curriculum”. You [teachers] should go there and suggest it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Training should be built taking into account the interests of both education and the real sector, the president emphasized. “In general, if you send an employer-sponsored student to the university, you should supervise him/her during the whole period of training. This is your area of responsibility. So is the subsequent retention of a young specialist,” the head of state emphasized.
