Zakharova: Over 30 countries keen on cooperation with BRICS

MOSCOW, 21 August (BelTA) – Over 30 countries have expressed an interest in systemic cooperation with BRICS, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing for the press in Moscow on 21 August, BelTA has learned.

Maria Zakharova pointed out the huge interest in BRICS in the world. "We all have seen this activity around the world as more countries are expressing their desire to join BRICS," she said.

"The BRICS door never closes. The BRICS group seeks closer ties with the world majority. Currently, over 30 states have expressed their interest in building up systemic cooperation with BRICS," Maria Zakharova noted.

"This clearly demonstrates the BRICS basic principles. These principles are well known: mutual respect, balance of interests and a consensus approach," she emphasized.

Maria Zakharova said that Russia's presidency in BRICS will culminate with the summit due in Kazan on 22-24 October. "We will continue the tradition and hold an extended meeting of leading and developing countries in the BRICS+/Outreach format in Kazan. We expect that with the active support of our partners the Russian presidency will be marked by great practical results and will make a significant contribution to strengthening the BRICS position in the international arena," she said.
