Zakharova: Munich conference falls short compared to other events, including Minsk forum

MOSCOW, 18 February (BelTA) - The Munich Security Conference is losing its luster in many respects compared to other international forums, including the Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said at a news briefing, BelTA has learned.

“In terms of thematic content, the Munich conference is not only noticeably sagging but is losing out on certain parameters to forums such as the Minsk Conference on Eurasian Security, the Sir Bani Yas Forum in the UAE, the Antalya Diplomatic Forum held in Türkiye and the Doha Forum organized in Qatar,” Maria Zakharova said. “I am not even mentioning the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which has become a universal forum discussing truly global, critical issues and the Eastern Economic Forum. And, of course, the conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club.”

“That's where the topics closer to reality are discussed,” she emphasized.

Maria Zakharova believes that participants in the Munich conference, instead of bickering with each other, ought to discuss the situation in international security, which has approached a rather dangerous threshold due to a whole range of interconnected factors, including the end of the life cycle of the New START and a number of other acute global and regional problems.

“This year in Munich, we actually witnessed a settling of scores within the Western community. Instead of dialogue between countries or the political science community representing different points of view, we saw a closed-door gathering, an internal squabble. The most interesting thing is, if some time ago it was aggressively disposed towards other centers of power such as Russia, China, and so on, now, it turns out, they have started to sort things out with each other in front of an astonished public,” Maria Zakharova noted.
