Volfovich: Security treaty strengthens cooperation between Belarus, Russia

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) - The Treaty on Security Guarantees within the framework of the Union State strengthens cooperation in the field of security, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich said as he commented on the strategic document on the air of the Belarus 1TV channel, BelTA learned.

The Treaty on Security Guarantees within the framework of the Union State came into force, and that was a historic event in the life of Belarus and Russia, Aleksandr Volfovich said. “For me, as State Secretary [of the Security Council of Belarus] it was important that the protocol on the exchange of instruments of ratification was signed. Thus this document has acquired legal and legitimate force and has entered into practical force. This is very important today. It is a unique document. We have never had such a document before. The document underpins the strategic documents, strategic planning of the Union State Security Concept and the Military Doctrine. And in general, the adoption of this document opens a new chapter in the relationship between our countries and strengthens joint response in the field of security - not only military security, in all areas of, let's say, national security,” Aleksandr Volfovich emphasized.

He dwelled on the obligations both countries have assumed. “According to the treaty, our countries have mutual obligations to take response measures in case of encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our countries - both within each country and as a whole within the Union State. First of all, this is a joint collective response with the use of all potential to the political pressure that is being exerted on our countries today, to the economic sanctions, to the threat of the use of military force,” he said.

Aleksandr Volfovich called the document very timely and zeitgeisty. “This document defines new forms and mechanisms for involving the military, law-enforcement agencies and special units in the efforts to ensure security,” he said.

The head of the Security Council emphasized that relations with the Russian Federation had been good before, but the signing of the treaty gave legal force to the use, in particular, of the regional group of troops and to other issues of military and military-technical cooperation.
