SMOLENSK, 28 January (BelTA) – Vitebsk and Smolensk Oblasts are set to strengthen all-round cooperation, Vitebsk Oblast Governor Alexander Kosinets said at the ceremony of signing the action plan of trade, economic, sci-tech, humanitarian and cultural cooperation between Smolensk Oblast and Vitebsk Oblast for 2014-2015, BelTA has learnt.
Alexander Kosinets stressed that the signed action plan had been elaborated in detail and included a big amount of clauses which implementation would help intensify the cooperation between the neighboring regions. The Vitebsk Oblast Governor took note of the joint work in the sci-tech sphere, mechanical engineering and agriculture.
Smolensk Oblast Governor Alexei Ostrovsky added that the Belarusian agricultural experience would be of use for the Russian region. “You make good sausages, and we would like to open such producing shops here,” he said.
The two officials were unanimous in the need for a closer cooperation between profile departments and related business.
In 2013 the trade between Vitebsk and Smolensk Oblasts exceeded $277 million, including exports - $179 million, imports - $98.1 million. Food products account for 42% of the exports to Smolensk Oblast. Main imports included copper and aluminum wire (33%), ammonium nitrate, clothes (8% each), steel products, aluminum doors and windows, plastic building materials. Vitebsk Oblast also imported sunflower and colza oil, fish products.
