Venezuelan FM: Non-Aligned Movement supports Palestine, opposes sanctions

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) - The Non-Aligned Movement supports Palestine and opposes unilateral Western sanctions, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto said at the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement running in Uganda on 18-20 January, RIA Novosti has learned.

According to him, during the meeting, the foreign ministers of the NAM countries "expressed support for Palestine and spoke against the illegal restrictive measures". He stressed that the Non-Aligned Movement was stepping up at a time "when imperialism made its choice in favor of wars".

"In today's complex world, we see what is happening in Palestine, we see how imperialism is fomenting wars. It is very important that the Non-Aligned Movement has stepped up. This is what we are doing here," Yvan Gil Pinto said.

The Non-Aligned Movement was founded in 1961 with the view to advancing interests of developing countries in the context of Cold War confrontation. Today, the movement comprises 120 countries, or 60% of the UN's numerical membership. Seventeen countries and 10 organizations have observer status in the organization.
