Union State PA observers view presidential election in Uzbekistan as open, competitive

MOSCOW, 26 October (BelTA) – A delegation of observers of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State viewed the presidential election in Uzbekistan on 24 October as corresponding to democratic principles, BelTA learned from the PA press service.

“The delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly concluded that the 24 October 2021 presidential election in Uzbekistan were held in accordance with the current electoral legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in line with the principles of democratic elections, were open and competitive,” the press service said.

Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly were part of the CIS observation mission. The delegation was headed by Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly's Commission on Foreign Policy, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rachkov. The commission also comprised member of the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Social and Youth Policy, Science, Culture and Humanitarian Affairs, member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vladimir Krugly.

Voting was observed in Tashkent and Samarkand. Observers from the Parliamentary Assembly were present at the opening and closing polling stations, counting of votes. They visited about 20 polling stations. MPs get familiar with the work of precinct election commissions and the organization of the voting process. The observation activities were conducted in full compliance with the documents adopted within the CIS and the legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“Observers from the Parliamentary Assembly gave high assessment to modern information and communication technologies used during the election and to the measures taken to ensure the safety of all participants of the electoral process due to the current epidemiological situation. The PA observers also praised measures taken by the election organizers to ensure the electoral rights of citizens with disabilities,” the press service said.

During their visit, the Union State MPs met with Chairman of the Committee on International Relations, Foreign Economic Relations, Foreign Investments and Tourism of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Ravshanbek Alimov, and Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan Bahrom Kuchkarov. A meeting also took place to share experience in combating COVID-19 with Uzbekistan Healthcare Minister Abduhakim Khadjibayev.
