MINSK, 3 July (BelTA) – Upon Belarus’ initiative the Industrial Development Board of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) made the decision “Inclusive and sustainable industrial development in middle-income countries” in Vienna, Austria by consensus. The decision focuses on UNIDO’s partnership with middle-income countries taking into account new global challenges, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The new document of the Industrial Development Board provides for updating UNIDO’s strategic framework for partnership with middle-income countries, taking into account new global challenges and recommendations developed at the high-level international conference on middle-income countries held in Manila, Philippines in April 2025,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. According to the World Bank’s classification, 104 UNIDO member states, including Belarus, fall into the category of middle-income countries.

UNIDO is a United Nations specialized agency chartered to assist countries with the modernization of industrial production, environmentally sound and sustainable industrial development, and the introduction and adaptation of new technologies.

The Industrial Development Board is one of UNIDO’s key bodies. It provides operational guidance, develops proposals for its program activities, and approves the budget. It consists of 53 members elected by the General Conference for a period of four years. In November 2023 Belarus was elected to the Industrial Development Board for the fifth time.

“Belarus consistently supports the strengthening of UNIDO’s leading role in promoting sustainable industrial development in countries around the world and uses the organization’s expert potential and capabilities to improve the competitiveness and environmental friendliness of its manufacturing facilities,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.

In 2019 the General Conference adopted the UNIDO Strategic Framework for Partnership with Middle-Income Countries. The framework had been developed upon Belarus’ initiative and is designed to take into account interests of this category of countries and increase the efficiency of the organization’s efforts in the field of sustainable industrial development. For the practical implementation of this document a decision on the work plan proposed by Belarus was adopted by consensus in November 2022.

In a speech at the session of the Industrial Development Board in Vienna, the Belarusian delegation emphasized that Belarus prioritizes problems of middle-income countries. The delegation reminded that Belarus has been consistently promoting the interests of this numerous category of countries within the UN system for many years.
