UN urged to recognize EU's mistreatment of refugees at Belarusian border

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – The United Nations Organization has to recognize the violation of human rights of refugees by European Union countries at the Belarusian-Polish border, BelTA learned from Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich.

The official said: “We pointed it out during the meeting with UN high commissioner for human rights. Belarus hopes that the relevant UNHCR branches will clearly record the human rights violations committed by our partners, who interfere with legal attempts of refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers to get the refugee status in the countries Belarus' borders with.”

Despite the certain stabilization of the border situation Polish law enforcement personnel periodically use water cannons against refugees at the border checkpoint and the nearby area. The refugees are trying to distance themselves, cover kids, and dry their clothes.

BelTA reported earlier that the other day Belarus informed the leadership of international organizations about the country's stance on the migration crisis. Belarus' diplomatic mission to the UN office and other international organizations in Geneva regularly interacts with secretariats at the expert level and provides them with the relevant information. “The dialogue has been expanded onto the high level lately,” the head of the Belarusian diplomatic mission stated.

Yuri Ambrazevich said he had already had a number of meetings and new contacts with top officials of international bodies would take place in the next few days. Meetings have been held with the United Nations high commissioner for refugees, the high commissioner for human rights, the head of the Secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross Societies, the head of UNICEF's regional office in Geneva. The official is expected to meet with the director general of the International Organization for Migration on 19 November. A meeting with the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross is scheduled for next Monday, Yuri Ambrazevich said.
