MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – The resolution on Belarus that was passed by the United Nations Human Rights Council is another step in the European Union's campaign meant to bully and hound Belarus, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs press service.
On 18 September the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the situation of human rights in Belarus in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election and its aftermath.
The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs press service stated in response: “We are forced to regret that many years of effort of Belarus, its allies, and supporters to fill the work of the UN Human Rights Council with real meaning that every person can understand have been cancelled out by the adoption of this unprecedented resolution. In a bid to cater to ideological interests of one player – the European Union – the resolution casts doubts not only on high goals of the UN Human Rights Council but also on UN Charter principles, which still underpin international relations.”
The source pointed out that urgent debates on Belarus had been held. The hustle can be explained only by the fact that most of the arguments specified by the draft resolution had been rejected already. “We previously heard these accusations and rebukes from the European Parliament and the European Council – mass raping, torture, and the OSCE ODIHR [election observation] mission which didn't come but still condemns. The European Union delegation rushed to bake emotions and fake news into yet another resolution after spending so much strength and effort on fighting them,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The source added that the adoption of the resolution was a political performance directed and conducted by the European Union. “Today's theater of the absurd on the platform of the United Nations Organization is another testimony to the fact that the UN Human Rights Council has become a tool for pursuing mercantile interests of European diplomacy. This is why we consider the resolution on Belarus as another step in the European Union's campaign meant to bully and hound the country – now by leveraging the authority of the universal international organization with silent consent of part of the international community,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. “Due to the lack of universally acknowledged criteria and mechanisms to evaluate elections any country can now be a target of geopolitical freebooters that hide behind urgent resolutions of the UN Human Rights Council.”
The UN Charter directly forbids the United Nations Organization to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state. As a founding country of the United Nations Organization Belarus calls upon everyone to carefully reread today's resolution in order to verify its compliance with the UN Charter. Although the fact that a minority of members of the UN Human Rights Council voted for the resolution on Belarus is self-explanatory. “We are convinced that the Belarusian nation will come up with a common vision of its future through a peaceful dialogue, without external interference. We are convinced that with support of allies and associates our country will decently overcome unfair external accusations,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed.
