Sovereignty of CSTO member states identified as key priority

MOSCOW, 10 August (BelTA) – Ensuring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Collective Security Treaty Organization member states is one of the key priorities of the organization. Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Stanislav Zas made the statement as he met with Armenia Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan on 10 August, BelTA has learned.

The CSTO secretary general informed the Armenian head of government that the Collective Security Treaty Organization closely follows the situation at the Azerbaijan-Armenia border and is concerned about an increase in frequency and the expansion of geography of armed incidents. It was stressed that the tensions are having a negative effect on Armenia's security and in the CSTO's responsibility area as a whole. The tensions also complicate the fulfillment of peace agreements reached by the leaders of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan on 9 November 2020 and 11 January 2021.

Stanislav Zas and Nikol Pashinyan discussed progress in preparations for a session of the CSTO Collective Security Council and a joint session of the Foreign Ministers Council, the Defense Ministers Council, and the Committee of Secretaries of Security Councils of CSTO member states, which are supposed to take place in Dushanbe in September. Forthcoming transition of the CSTO presidency to Armenia was discussed. Stanislav Zas informed Nikol Pashinyan about progress in preparations for the sessions and emphasized Armenia's commitment within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

In particular, it was noted that 2022 is an anniversary year. A resolution on the action plan dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Collective Security Treaty and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Collective Security Treaty Organization is supposed to be signed during the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council, Stanislav Zas said. A number of other documents will be signed as well, including a declaration of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
