Shoigu: Russia reserves right to use nuclear arms in event of Western aggression

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) - Moscow reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in the event of the West’s aggression, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergey Shoigu said in an interview with TASS.

"In November 2024, amendments were introduced to the Basic Principles of State Policy of the Russian Federation on Nuclear Deterrence, according to which Russia reserves the right to use nuclear arms in the event of aggression against it or the Republic of Belarus, including with the use of conventional weapons," he noted. 

According to Sergey Shoigu, Russia is "carefully monitoring Europe’s military preparations."

"In accordance with Russia’s National Security Strategy, in the event foreign countries carry out hostile actions representing a threat to Russia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the country considers it legitimate to take appropriate symmetric and asymmetric measures necessary to thwart such actions and prevent them from repeating," he said.

According to the Russian official, nuclear deterrence "is carried out against the to countries and military coalitions that regard Russia a potential adversary and that possess weapons of mass destruction or conventional armed forces with significant military capabilities."

Additionally, such actions also apply to countries that provide their territory and resources for preparing and carrying out aggression against Russia.
"The tasks of ensuring the integrity of Russia and Belarus’s common defense space and joint strategic deterrence events are enshrined in the Security Concept of the Union State and the Treaty on Security Guarantees between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus approved in December 2024,. the document were drawn up with direct participation of the Security Councils of both countries," Sergey Shoigu concluded.
