Ryzhenkov: Illegal migration is of concern to Old Europe, but not to Belarus' EU neighbors

BREST, 22 November (BelTA) – The topic of illegal migration is of no interest to the EU countries neighboring Belarus, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov told the media following a joint meeting of the boards of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Russia in Brest on 22 November, BelTA has learned.

“Our neighbors from the EU have no interest in discussing this topic, although they should have been interested,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

According to him, certain groups in the countries of Old Europe have begun to  take cautious steps to address serious problems associated with illegal migration, because it is of great concern to them.

“We see that for our neighbors - Poland, Lithuania, Latvia - this [topic] is an opportunity to increase their political and economic weight, to present themselves as 'a shield', to get money from the European Union and embezzle it. We are aware of these corruption schemes that occasionally slip into the public space,” the Belarusian foreign minister emphasized.
