Russian parliament ratifies protocol on coordinator in CSTO peacekeeping activities

MOSCOW, 13 April (BelTA) - The Federation Council of Russia's Federal Assembly approved on 13 April 2022 the ratification of a protocol on introducing amendments to the agreement on peacekeeping activities of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) of 6 October 2007, BelTA has learned.

The ratification was supported by the Russian State Duma on 5 April.

During the consideration of the document by the upper house, it was noted that the protocol is aimed at organizing the participation of peacekeeping forces of the CSTO in operations under the auspices of the UN. The document introduces the concept of a “coordinating state”. It is envisaged that under the aegis of this state, the collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO can be used in the UN peacekeeping operations.

The protocol does not oblige CSTO peacekeepers to participate in UN peacekeeping operations. The final decision on the possibility of participation in such operations rests with each CSTO state individually.

The protocol was signed by the CSTO heads of state in Dushanbe on 16 September 2021.
