Russian journalist: There are always people who seek to utilize protests

MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – There are always people who are interested in protests and want to harness them, Editor-in-Chief of the Govorit Moskva radio station Roman Babayan told reporters on 8 September, BelTA has learned.

“It is not a secret that we view Belarus as a fraternal nation and treat Belarusians like brothers. The things that are going on in Belarus now cannot but alarm us. We are closely following the developments here and we really do not want Belarus to experience the events that happened in Ukraine. Thanks God, it is not happening,” Roman Babayan said.

The journalist noted: although protests continue, they take place mostly on Sundays and they are losing momentum. “At the same time, life is going on as usual and this is encouraging. There are no naive people; we are all adults and we are fully aware that there are always people who want to harness protests and there are always those who are interested in these protests,” he said.

According to Roman Babayan, he saw similar events unfolding in Yugoslavia in the late 1990s, however back then journalists and the public did not know about these technologies. “If we try to find the difference between the events in Yugoslavia back then and the events that took place in Ukraine and in Georgia not so long ago and the events that could happen in Belarus, we will be surprised to find out that this is the same thing. Colors of balloons, ribbons and other things might change, but this is essentially the same technology and there are always very many people who want to utilize it,” the journalist said.

“We met with the Belarusian president and he said the right thing: “You should understand that those who are doing all this target you, not us”. He meant Russia. By delivering a blow on Belarus, they strike at Russia. I absolutely agree with him,” Roman Babayan said.

A reminder, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave an interview to representatives of Russia's leading mass media outlets. The event took place in the Palace of Independence in Minsk and was attended by Editor-in-Chief of RT Margarita Simonyan, correspondent of the First Channel Anton Vernitsky, TV presenter at Russia-1 TV channel Yevgeny Rozhkov, and Editor-in-Chief of the Govorit Moskva radio station Roman Babayan.
