Russian FM: West is violating UN Charter principles in situation with Belarus

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – The West is violating the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and is using illegal sanctions against Belarus, Pyotr Ilyichev, director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"In the context of Belarus, we, unfortunately, see a familiar picture: Western countries are flouting the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and are trying to use the post-election situation to advance their narrow interests," Pyotr Ilyichev said.

In his words, familiar instruments, including illegal unilateral sanctions, are being used. “For our part, we consistently emphasize the unacceptability of interference in the internal affairs of Belarus, including through the UN platform. It is fundamentally important that the Belarusian people solve their domestic political issues on their own, without external pressure. Any international assistance to Minsk should be provided only upon its request,” Pyotr Ilyichev said. Moscow regularly communicates this to the partners, he noted.
