MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) – Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the Belarusian Parliament Sergei Rachkov participated in a panel discussion titled “The role of parliamentarians in nuclear security" held by the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security within the framework of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva on 14 October, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.
Sergei Rachkov briefed his colleagues on Belarus’ consistent policy in international security, disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
"The importance of Belarus' contribution to nuclear disarmament has been repeatedly confirmed in numerous documents agreed in bilateral and multilateral formats, including the final document of the 2000 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Our country has traditionally been a sponsor of the UN General Assembly resolution on the prohibition of the development and manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons, and a co-sponsor of a number of resolutions devoted to the most pressing problems of international security and disarmament, including resolutions initiated by the Non-Aligned Movement," Sergei Rachkov said.
"Belarus has been consistent in its support of the international efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical and biological weapons) and their delivery, and to prevent them from falling into terrorists' hands. Belarus is a participant of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism," he noted. "Belarus is committed to fulfilling its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and is taking the necessary measures to prevent the transfer of nuclear fissile materials from the Belarusian NPP to another party."
