Portuguese MEP condemns West's interference with Belarus' domestic affairs

MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) - Member of the European Parliament from the Republic of Portugal Joao Pimenta Lopes expressed solidarity and support for Belarus, its choice of development, and condemned attempts to interfere in its internal affairs by Western states during a meeting with member of the House of Representatives, member of the Communist Party of Belarus Sergei Klishevich during the Avante! Festival in the municipality of Seixal, Portugal, BelTA has learned.

“We express our solidarity with the Belarusian people and all the progressive forces of Belarus, which resist the attempts of external interference. We will defend the right of each state for sovereignty and the right of each nation to determine its own way of development. The European Parliament often speaks and makes decisions about Belarus. Most often it is interference in the internal affairs of the state,” Joao Pimenta Lopes said.

The member of the European Parliament stressed that the EU bears great responsibility for unleashing wars not only in various parts of the world but also in Europe itself, and currently in Ukraine.

“The interests of small states are subordinated to the interests of large ones, and this policy is aggressive toward these countries. There should be equality between states and social progress and peace must be protected. To achieve this goal, we have to change the correlation of forces in each country. The international communist movement seems to us very important. We need to deepen cooperation, to organize international meetings of communist and workers' parties. In March, such a meeting was organized in Portugal. We welcome the initiative of the Communist Party of Cuba to organize such a meeting in October,” Joao Pimenta Lopes said.

An official delegation of the Communist Party of Belarus is taking part in the annual Avante! Festival at the invitation of the Communist Party of Portugal.
