MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) – Western structures, like the European Union and NATO take away part of the sovereignty from their member states, which is not the case with the Shanghai Cooperation  Organization, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor at MGIMO, said in a new episode of BelTA’s YouTube project V Teme [On Point].

“The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has great opportunities and prospects. Of course, this is not immediately apparent. We have been building the Union State for many years, and its potential is still far from being exhausted. Any new organization is a good platform to forge new contacts. And this is very important, given that the Western world is closing off and degrading,” said Elena Ponomareva.

Meanwhile the East is on the rise, the political scientist remarked. “From my point of view, it is great and it makes perfect sense that Belarus joined the SCO. Of course, any organization has its limitations, but the SCO differs from Western structures. Western structures are rigid supranational organizations that chip away at the sovereignty of their member states,” she emphasized.

Elena Ponomareva meant such structures as the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance. “The SCO differs from them because it is interested in preserving and strengthening the sovereignty of the participating countries. That is, membership in the SCO bolsters the sovereignty of Belarus. This is very important to understand,” the political scientist remarked.
