MINSK, 2 February (BelTA) – Belarusians want to be actively involved in the country's political life, but the majority of them are in favor of preserving the strong presidential authority, Belarus Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko told journalists on 2 February, BelTA has learned.
Roman Golovchenko said that discussions that were held in the run-up to the Belarusian People's Congress showed that Belarusians want to participate in the country's political life more actively, to see the parliament play a bigger role, and local councils of deputies to have more powers.
“However, these debates and discussions made it clear to us that the majority of citizens and delegates are in favor of preserving the strong presidential authority. This demonstrates that there is no intention of destroying anything,” Roman Golovchenko noted.
Belarusians also supported the idea to make the Belarusian People's Congress a constitutional body, the prime minister said. The future role and authorities of the Belarusian People's Congress will be discussed at the upcoming edition of the event.
“The general idea is that despite all the innovations we should not weaken the presidential authority that cemented our country and helped us survive the enormous pressure we have experienced recently,” Roman Golovchenko said.
