Peskov: Use of Western non-nuclear missiles by Ukraine against Russia can prompt nuclear response

MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) — The use of Western non-nuclear missiles by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against Russia, according to the updated doctrine, can lead to a nuclear response, spokesman for the Russian president Dmitry Peskov told the media, TASS reports.

He noted that Russia's updated nuclear doctrine specifies the conceptual foundations for a nuclear strike. A critical threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its ally Belarus provides grounds for the use of nuclear weapons by the Russian Federation.

"Among other things, it concerns the fact that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in case of aggression with the use of conventional weapons against it and (or) Belarus as a member of the Union State, which creates a critical threat to their sovereignty and (or) their territorial integrity," Dmitry Peskov stated.

According to him, the Basic Principles of Russia's State Policy on Nuclear Deterrence were updated to bring the document in line with the current political situation. The spokesman pointed out that Russia considers the use of nuclear weapons as an extreme, forced measure.

Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russian servicemen are closely monitoring the situation in Kursk Oblast amid media reports that the United States expects the use of the U.S. ATACMS missiles for strikes on the region.
