Peskov comments on Ukrainian FM’s statement about readiness for negotiation process with Russia

MINSK, 24 July (BelTA) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba’s statement about Kiev’s readiness for talks with Moscow is in unison with the Kremlin’s position but further clarification is needed on the details, spokesman for the Russian president Dmitry Peskov told the media, TASS reports.

As Reuters reported, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said Kiev was ready for negotiations with Russia during the talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the Chinese city of Guangzhou on 24 July. Wang Yi pointed out that Beijing is committed to a political solution and a negotiated settlement.

The message itself is in unison with our position, Dmitry Peskov said, adding that clarification was needed on the details.

"We have all learned from reports from Beijing that he made such a statement at a meeting with Mr Wang Yi. One might say that the message in itself is in unison with our position. You know, Russia has never rejected talks, remaining open for a negotiation process. However, details are important here and we don’t know them yet. So let’s wait for some clarifications that will apparently follow," the Kremlin spokesman said.

During a meeting with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolinon in Kiev 23 July Vladimir Zelensky said that he understands the need to end the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible, Strana reported.  In a recent interview with the BBC, Zelensky also said that no one would agree to an armed conflict that would go on for another 10 years or many years. He also mentioned the possibility of negotiations with the Russian Federation, despite Ukraine's decree banning such negotiations. He also mentioned that Russian representatives should participate in the second so-called peace conference on Ukraine.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that the main obstacles are Zelensky's decree ruling out negotiations with Russia’s incumbent president and the Ukrainian initiatives which testify to the complete detachment of official Kiev from modern realities.
