GRODNO, 1 July (BelTA) – The Union State of Belarus and Russia threatens no one but is capable of defending itself, BelTA learned from State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich during the 9th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia.
Aleksandr Volfovich said: “Today's political situation is very complicated. The collective West led by the key curator – the United States of America – is trying to attain its goals. In particular, it wants to choke all the countries of the former Soviet Union and create tensions around borders of the Union State by various means.”
In his opinion, the introduction of sanctions against Belarus and Russia is designed to choke the economies and reformat the political systems of the two countries. “It is possible to oppose these sanctions only together. Nowadays Russia and Belarus are two strategic partners, which handle emerging problems together. I think we are doing it rather successfully. Today's forum is a vivid testimony to that. It is taking place in the territory of Grodno – one of Belarus' most beautiful cities,” the official noted.
Tighter ties and the enhancement of interaction of the two countries help deal with matters relating to the prosperity and economic development of Belarus and Russia, Aleksandr Volfovich believes.
“If we are talking about military cooperation, such matters have been dealt with at the highest level for a long time. The Belarusian-Russian regional group of military forces has been operating since 2000. We arrange exercises every two years on a systemic basis. We only move forward in this regard. It is primarily designed to ensure the security of the Union State. We don't threaten anyone but we are capable of protecting our borders,” Aleksandr Volfovich concluded.
