MINSK, 5 April (BelTA) – The foreign threat to Belarus will only grow stronger. Aleksei Avdonin, an analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR), made the statement on the air of the TV channel Belarus One on 2 April, BelTA has learned.
The political analyst noted that the opposition had failed to achieve its goals through peaceful protests. In his words, the opposition will now reformat its work and will resort to radical methods. The recent prevention of terrorist attacks in Belarus confirms it.
“The lull has been achieved primarily thanks to efforts of law enforcement bodies, smooth work of state-run mass media and government agencies. But the tensions and the threat that originates abroad and targets Belarus will only grow stronger because the goals have not been achieved, those people are enraged about the state and the entire state system. This is why they will use every method to achieve the goals, split the Belarusian society, and discredit government agencies. We already see it,” the analyst said.
In turn, Vladimir Pertsov, director of the Belarusian office of the interstate television company MTRK Mir, said that common people in Belarus are not interested in protests. He noted that some have decided to exploit legal political channels and create political bodies. Some have grown disillusioned with the opposition leaders and do not share their interests. Some are simply done toying with protests. This is why only radical Belarusians will take to the streets now, Vladimir Pertsov believes.
“It is impossible to encourage a massive number of Belarusians to protest in the streets. What is the opposition to do? It will resort to extreme measures,” he pointed out.
