MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) – A sensible constitutional reform will boost the stability of the Belarusian state, Director of the information and educational institution On-Trend Concept, political analyst Aleksandr Shpakovsky told the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.
The expert is convinced that it is important now to hear the views of various groups of people, to maintain a public and political dialogue, and to stop threats and violence. At the same time, he drew attention to the aggressive behavior of protesters. “Absolutely different groups of people are in this crowd, which is frightening: on the one hand there is unreasonable aggression, and on the other hand we see absolutely infantile attitudes of some participants. Politicians do not influence the street actions. I went to see these protests. There are no leaders, authoritative people there. They are managed from Warsaw, it's obvious,” he said.
At the same time, the views of people taking to the streets should be taken into account. After all, any conflicts, even fomented from outside, have their roots inside the country. "What makes the state strong? It has no confrontational rhetoric. These are our fellow citizens,” the political expert said.
Speaking about possible ways to resolve the current conflict, the analyst said that he sees only one way out. “The constitution should become a basic framework within which different political forces will compete and different structures will fight for power. If the constitutional reform works out well, we will have a more stable state relying on various institutions. If it does not work, there is a possibility that we will succumb to oligarchy like in Moldova or Ukraine where fat cats rule behind the smokescreen of democratic procedures and where an ordinary person means nothing,” Aleksandr Shpakovsky stressed.
Other participants of the program also believe that a comprehensive dialogue is needed to discuss constitutional amendments. In particular, Vasily Zadnepryany, Chairman of the Republican Labor and Justice Party, suggested inviting political parties to join this process. “At the first stage the dialogue should be maintained at least between the authorities and political parties that are officially registered and have a support base. We need to act. It is absolutely useless to pass the buck and do the finger-pointing. It means destroying the country. Let us save it together,” he said.
