Opinion: Events in Kazakhstan are a lesson for those who still believe in peaceful protests

MINSK, 13 January (BelTA) – The events in Kazakhstan have become a lesson for those who still believe in peaceful street protests, Oleg Gaidukevich, a member of the House of Representatives, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus, said on the air of the ONT TV channel on 12 January, BelTA reports.

Commenting on the crisis in Kazakhstan, the MP compared it with the Belarusian events: “For me, there is one very important thing: the actions of the Belarusian security forces in the first days. If someone thinks that this could not have happened in our country [bloodshed during street protests], he is mistaken. Such street violence begets an idea that no punishment will follow.”

According to Oleg Gaidukevich, as soon as the riots in Kazakhstan faced no resistance from the security forces, the degree of violence increased manifold. “If the Belarusian law enforcers had stepped aside in August 2020, the degree of violence would have been three times higher,” the politician said.
