Opinion: Baltic states cannot be sovereign in EU, NATO

MINSK, 10 May (BelTA) – The Baltic states cannot be sovereign being members of the European Union and NATO, the head of the Baltnews news agency, political scientist Andrei Starikov said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA informs.

Latvia has recently marked the 32nd anniversary of the restoration of independence. “When we talk about the state, it is correct to talk about sovereignty. But it does not exist. Can they determine their own foreign policy? They cannot. Can they fully determine their own domestic and personnel policy? They cannot, either. As to Latvia, it is a well-known fact that the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers, the list of ministers is forwarded to the U.S. Embassy in Riga for approval,” Andrei Starikov said.

According to him, the Baltic countries are not economically self-sufficient. “These are bodies connected to artificial life-support devices in the form of European foundations and subsidies. They cannot be sovereign being in the EU and NATO. These organizations are not collegial bodies. Countries are not equal there, which is not the case with our formations, like the Eurasian Economic Union, the CSTO. We took into account all the shortcomings of similar Western structures, so we created our organizations in a completely different way,” the political scientist stated.
