MPs confirm Belarus’ openness to Algerian students

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) - Belarus is open to Algerian students seeking a modern education at Belarusian universities. The matter was discussed during a joint meeting of the working group of the National Assembly of Belarus for cooperation with the Parliament of Algeria and the Belarusian-Algerian parliamentary friendship group of the National People’s Assembly of the Parliament of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

Upon the invitation of the head of the Belarusian-Algerian parliamentary friendship group Hadjira Abbas the members of the House of Representatives Ruslan Kosygin and Nadezhda Khaltsova and a member of the Council of the Republic Valentina Baiko are staying in the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria on a return visit on 27-28 January.

During the meeting, the parties discussed prospects for the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation, strengthening bilateral ties, and the implementation of joint projects in industry, the agricultural sector, pharmaceuticals, banking, and other areas.

Special attention was paid to the implementation of agreements reached by the heads of state during Aleksandr Lukashenko’s visit to Algeria, and the roadmap for the development of trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation for 2026-2027.

The parties also discussed the topic of food security in African countries. The Belarusian MPs noted that Belarus, due to its accumulated experience in agriculture and systematic work on its mechanization and modernization, has achieved food self-sufficiency. This became possible thanks to high-quality higher education. “Belarus is open to Algerian students seeking a modern education, both in humanities and technical universities, as well as in higher education institutions of agricultural and food industry profiles,” the statement said.

In his address to Algerian colleagues, Ruslan Kosygin emphasized that Belarus attaches great importance to the first visit of Algerian MPs to Belarus and values the friendly nature of Belarusian-Algerian relations.

“The development of contacts in all spheres of life should contribute to the growth of the wellbeing of the two nations. As our president said, we are talking not just about mutually beneficial economic relations. We are talking about friendship, based on warm and trusting relations between the leaders of the states, between the parliaments, between our peoples,” he said.

To develop cooperation in the humanitarian sector, the parliamentarians confirmed Belarus’ readiness to host 20 Algerian children and two accompanying persons for rest and recreation at the National Children’s Educational and Health Center Zubrenok from 26 June to 5 July 2026.

A meeting also took place between the Belarusian parliamentarians and Deputy Speaker of the Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament) in charge of Foreign Affairs Rabah Baghali.

During the meeting, Ruslan Kosygin emphasized: “We consider the functioning of our parliamentary cooperation groups as one of the important mechanisms for promoting the development of interstate relations. In this direction, we are consistently building up interaction, forming a solid foundation for political and economic contacts. Cooperation with Algeria and Africa as a whole is one of the priorities of Belarus’ foreign policy. We appreciate the attention that the leadership of Algeria pays to strengthening dialogue with our country.”
